WHAT WE LOVE...

The Penny, named after 'a small dog with a big personality', opened in the summer of 2022 in the hip Williamsburg neighbourhood of Brooklyn, a rather calmer alternative to frantic central Manhattan. Occasionally carillon bells chime from the nearby church, creating a pleasant, unusual vibe for NYC. Guest rooms are modelled on a Brooklyn apartment, featuring a basic kitchenette, hardwood floors, a smattering of art books and slick décor and furnishings. There are good local contemporary artworks on display throughout the hotel by fine arts graduate students from Bard College, who are housed elsewhere in the building. There are also works on display by artists with developmental disabilities, supported by two local, non-profit community arts organisations.

The décor around the property is simple, bright and colourful. There's a small, bright white entrance lobby area with shelves of artworks in cassette and CD cases and a colourful artwork hanging from the ceiling.

There are many striking, colourful artworks around the hotel. There's a rooftop bar/restaurant, and a plain yet spacious courtyard with some black and white seating, lined by plants and a little section of street art.

Rooms

Our room had a big window with a view of the Williamsburg skyline... although the view can't compete with Manhattan. We loved the bright and bold colours used in the rooms.

Food & Drink

When we stayed the new rooftop restaurant hadn't opened, but we loved the free coffee between 8-10am in the lobby. The breakfast pastries were also great.

El Nico: rooftop restaurant and bar, creative Mexican cuisine. Small plates and large plates, complemented by cocktails. Open for brunch and dinner.
