WHAT WE LOVE...

Oddly, Newmarket is not blessed with all that many good hotels, but the Bedford Lodge Hotel and Spa is the place to stay for the discerning visitor, with extremely comfy, moderately priced rooms, great facilities and excellent food. Perched on the edge of Newmarket's small town centre, it's a privately-owned establishment that has been spruced up over recent years and is all the better for that; with 77 refurbished rooms, a popular bar and restaurant, 24-hour room service and a series of private dining and function rooms, the largest of which hosts regular weddings that spill out on to the lawns and gardens behind. It also has a pool, sauna and steam room, a large gym with excellent facilities, and a modern spa and health club.

THE DETAILS

Location

Part of Newmarket's charm is that it is a unique, one-industry town, totally dominated by horseracing. You'll see this everywhere you look at Bedford Lodge.

The hotel is in Newmarket, a short walk from its historic centre, and around 15 miles from both Cambridge and Bury St Edmunds.
By car: Bedford Lodge is 1 hour 40 mins from London, around 2 hours from Birmingham and 30 mins from Cambridge. There is free private parking at the hotel.
By train: London Kings Cross to Newmarket (via Cambridge) takes 1 hour 30 mins. The station is a 20-minute walk or 5-minute taxi from the hotel. thetrainline.com

Style & Character

Bedford Lodge suits anyone who wants to discover Newmarket and is also keen on eating well in a town not exactly blessed with good restaurants, but of course it would most appeal to someone interested in horseracing. The hot tub on the roof of the spa is probably the hotel's most unique feature.

Service & Facilities

The staff are confident and attentive, with the sort of pride in good service that you tend to only get in privately owned hotels.

Rooms

The best rooms are in the hotel's original wing - bright, dual-aspect suites on the upper floor of the elegant Georgian building. We love the fact that quite a lot of good stuff comes as standard in even the most basic rooms.

King Bed, Executive Suite, Run of the House, Superior Junior Suite, Superior King, Superior King, Superior Twin Room, Mews Twin Room, Mews Executive Suite
Facilities include: ensuite bathrooms with separate bath and shower, Molton Brown products, tea and coffee making facilities, TV, safe, hairdryer and bathrobes, access to the Health & Fitness Club

Food & Drink

The bar is homely and the restaurant well-lit and cosy - and serves excellent food. What's not to like? The sea trout escabeche is pretty good, as is the excellent quality local beef.

Squires Restaurant: local produce, European-inspired fine dining, steaks, burgers, Sunday roasts, nibbles and sharing platters. Open daily for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Mains range from £12.50.
Roxana Bar: bar snacks, drinks and Afternoon Tea. Food served from 12pm each day, Afternoon Tea 2.30-5.30pm Mon-Sat, 3-5.30pm Sundays.
