This grande dame Venetian hotel is a bucket-list destination to experience old-fashioned luxury in an unrivalled setting. Built in 1475 and formerly home of the 16th-century doge of Venice, Andrea Gritti, the palace occupies a prime spot on the grand canal and is full of Venetian design flourishes. It became the first luxury hotel in Venice when it opened in 1895 and an important stop on the early 20th-century "grand tour". Among its star-studded guests were writers Ernest Hemingway and Somerset Maughn. Now, after an extensive renovation, it has become part of the Marriott Luxury Collection. Rooms are full of plush fabrics, antique mirrors and Murano glass chandeliers. Cocktails, dinner and breakfast are taken on the canalside terrace and facilities include a small spa and a cookery school.

Dine on the terrace and you have the best seats in town for a view of the comings and goings on Grand Canal. The cod fillet served on creamed cannellini beans with turnip greens and black truffle was satisfyingly hearty and intensely flavoured.
