This is a stylish five-star on a tree-lined road in the fashionable Dublin 4 area, just south of the city centre and near plenty of cafés and restaurants as well as the Grand Canal and Aviva Stadium. The hotel was originally a home for nurses and has a lovely red-brick Victorian façade. A more modern rear wing was added in recent years, so there is a choice of rooms in the old part of the building, which has original features like high ceilings and sash windows and décor unique to each room, or more modern rooms in the rear wing. The restaurant is bright and airy, the bar and library are cosy meeting spots and the outdoor terraces are partially covered and heated.
We loved the lovely tree-lined roads and historic houses around the area, plus strolling along the canal among autumn leaves.
It's a 20-minute walk to St Stephen's Green and the National Museum. The hotel is in a good location for both the Aviva Stadium and RDS.
By plane: direct flights to Dublin from Manchester and Birmingham (1 hour), and London (1 hour 15 minutes). It's a 25-minute drive to the hotel. Parking costs €20 per day. skyscanner.net

Rooms in the old part of the building have original features like bay windows, portholes and individual colour schemes and furnishings. We loved the quirky and unusual furniture in the room such as bedside lockers, chairs and light fittings.

Enjoy sunset cocktails on the Nurserie terrace and champagne afternoon tea in front of an open fire in the library. The pan-fried sea bass with celeriac and carrot roshti, salsify crisps and bisque purée in The Eddison was delicious.
